L'Alliance Française de Leeds offers general French classes at all ability levels.

Our level groups as well as their progression are defined according to the Common European Framework of Reference for languages (CEFR). The classes are designed to develop the reception (listening/reading) and production (speaking/writing) skills of our students as well as their cultural knowledge.



- 22-hr course: 11 weeks/2 hours per week

Complete Beginners (A0)

If you have never done French before, this course which lasts for a term will allow you to discover the alphabet, the numbers, pronunciation and some grammar basics. You will also learn how to introduce yourself and others. If you already know this, then the A1 course is recommended.

Improvers (A2)

These courses will enable you to understand isolated sentences and frequently used expressions related to areas of high personal relevance. You will be able to take part in simple exchanges of information on familiar and routine matters and express opinions and feelings. At the end of this course, your level will be comparable to that achieved at GCSE (Higher level)/AS Level.

Level A2 has two sub-levels:  

Improvers 1 A2.1
Improvers 2 A2.2

Beginners/Elementary (A1)

This is the discovery stage of the language. These courses will enable you to understand and use familiar everyday expressions for concrete purposes about yourself and your immediate environment. You will be able to interact in a simple way with French speaking people. At the end of this stage, you will be approximately at the level achieved with GCSE Foundation level.

Level A1 has two sub-levels:

Elementary A1.2

Intermediate (B1)

These courses will enable you to become independent and maintain discussions. You will develop the ability to deal with situations likely to arise in daily life and deal with the unpredictable as well as express opinions. At the end of this course, your level will be comparable to that achieved at AS Level.

Level B1 has two sub-levels:  

Intermediate 1 B1.1
Intermediate 2 B1.2

Alter Ego + B1 - Livre de l'élève / Alter Ego + B1 - Cahier d'activité


Upper Intermediate (B2)

These courses will enable you to develop the ability communicate with a degree of spontaneity and fluency during a conversation with a native speaker, in a way that is comfortable for everyone. You will be able to discuss current affairs, argue, defend and negotiate your viewpoints convincingly. At the end of this course, your level will be comparable to that achieved with A2 Level – Foundation.

Level B2 has two sub-levels:  

Upper Intermediate 1 B2.1
Upper Intermediate 2 B2.2

Ressources: A large range of authentic documents (articles, videos, radio and TV shows, books...) carefully chosen by our teachers.




Practice your French conversation skills in a friendly, non-intimidating environment supervised by a qualified, experienced native French teacher. Our focus is on interactive activities, enabling students to start talking as soon as the lesson starts. You will be given the opportunity to recreate everyday conversations, tackle particular situations you encounter, take part in discussions around a theme that interests the group – we tailor-make our French conversation lessons to suit the needs, level and objectives of the group and we are open to suggestions from our students.
